Title: Head Shots Study
Media: Mechanical pencil
Date created: 01/2010
Size: 13 x 14

Description:
This is just a fun pencil study of the human head from different angles done in pencil, using the only live (and free) reference model I have available at all times. :) Minimal shading present, as this is just a sketch.

The scanner was too small for this to scan as a single image so I had to overlap and the text at the bottom left has been distorted. Here's more or less what it says:

-Faces are very fun and eyes are the best part of any face--the window to emotion and feeling.
-Too many lines can make a face look severe. A drawing will already be more severe than the person in real life and the way to best limit unwanted harshness is to omit lines (especially lines describing noses) and to keep all lines soft, even at this sketching stage.
-Note how eyes and lips wrap around the head in a curve, rather than lying flat in it, which is a common drawing mistake.
Also note how the ears are aligned between the bottom line of the nose and the brow bone (if a person is looking at you head on), but as a person tilts their head up or down the ears will appear higher and lower on a 2D plane (even though the ears are still in that same strip between brows and nose bottom if you draw curved lines around the head).

Thanks! Yeah, I'm really into focusing on making the eyes dominant. I love how intense and interesting good eyes can make a drawing.
