Hajra S. Meeks is an artist and writer living in the Bay Area. Her attachment to art began when she was very young, and throughout her pursuit of diverse fields of study, she has continued to produce fine art, children’s book illustrations and cultural artwork in watercolor, ink, acrylic, pastel, and oil pastel. Exhibitions of her art have included “The Splendour of Islamic Art” at Kolligian Library (displayed during Michelle Obama’s visit to UC Merced) and “Exploring Art in Eastern Lands: Mughal and Persian Portraiture” at the Mariposa County Arts Council.

Her Bachelor of Science in Physics with a Minor in History was completed at the University of San Francisco (USF), and her Masters of Science in History of International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Her Masters thesis on American views of Muhammad Ali Jinnah (the founder of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan) was awarded Distinction, the highest ranking possible in the British educational system. She has lectured at the University of California in Merced for four years and is currently studying at the Vermont College of the Fine Arts.

Pack your snowshoes, I'm going to Vermont!

I'm happy to report that the Vermont College of Fine Arts--the #1 Low Residency MFA Writing Program in the country--has accepted me!  They think I'll be a great writer and illustrator for children and young adults.  Yaaay!!!

As part of the application, I submitted a critical essay on the stylistic elements of The Forgotten Beasts of Eld, one of my favorite books, along with a statement of intent, a pair of children's book manuscripts and a 30-page excerpt from my young adult novel-in-progress.  I look forward to doing all my own illustrations for these three books and I hope they will be published during my time at VCFA or shortly thereafter.  The children's books are called _How to Lure a Peri_ and _Why the Crow and the Dove are No Longer Friends_.  The YA novel is titled, _The Boy, the Magic Carpet, and the Ring of Basra_.  I'm excited!

Now I just hope my sprained wrists heal up by January, because that's when I start.  For the moment, I'm reading a lot of YA and children's books that are on the faculty reading list.

I'm excited!!  Wish me luck, and I hope it works out well.

Anytime! It reminded me of my old school.I've painting on a wall there for a Social Work Society.In my current school I paint backdrops for concerts and other events :) It's really fun to leave a mark isn't it? :D
